All towbars require electrics whether you plan on simply using a cycle carrier or pulling a caravan. There are 3 types of towing electrics; single, twin and 13 pin.

7 Pin Single Electrics (12N) 7 Pin Twin Electrics (12N & 12S) 13 pin Electrics
7 Pin Single Electrics (12N) provide power from the towbar to the lights on a trailer or caravan. If you’re only planning to tow a trailer this is all you need. It is recommended that you use single electrics for a cycle carrier so that you can power a light board over the bikes. Caravans being towed using single electrics won’t be able to power internal appliances such as a fridge or freezer. 7 Pin Twin Electrics (12N & 12S) are recommended for towing a caravan. The second socket provides power to run internal appliances in the caravan such as the fridge, lights or even charge a battery. 13 pin Electrics are slowly replacing the 2 separate sockets currently used in this country, they are standard in most other European countries. A 13 pin socket is basically two 7 pin sockets merged in to one. Please check what type of fitting comes with your caravan, those manufactured from 2008 will be fitted with a 13 pin connector.
